Mark Carney expressed confidence that Canada would secure a favorable agreement with the United States during his White House visit.
During a notable diplomatic meeting at the White House on Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney broke the ice with a humorous remark directed at US President Donald Trump.
"I wore red for you," Carney quipped as they exchanged handshakes and brief pleasantries outside the presidential residence.
This high-level meeting follows months of trade tensions, particularly after Trump implemented a significant 35 percent tariff on Canadian imports beginning August 1.
Despite these economic strains, Trump adopted a cordial approach with Carney during their discussions, expressing optimism about progress toward a trade agreement, though offering few concrete concessions regarding the substantial US tariffs.
Trump repeatedly commended Carney as a "great leader," while the Canadian Prime Minister faced domestic pressure to demonstrate meaningful progress during this second White House visit since taking office in April.
During their Oval Office meeting, Trump expressed confidence in the outcome, stating, "I think they're going to walk away very happy," and noting, "I think we've come a long way over the last few months, actually, in terms of that relationship."
The US President characterized the relationship between North American neighbors—Canada and Mexico—as having "natural conflict" over business due to competition for the same markets, adding that there was "nothing wrong with it."
For his part, Carney demonstrated optimism that Canada would "get the right deal" with the United States, its primary economic partner.
The meeting featured several lighthearted exchanges, including shared laughter when Trump joked about a Canadian "merger," referencing his previous suggestions about Canada becoming the 51st US state.
The economic relationship between the two nations is deeply intertwined, with 75 percent of Canada's exports destined for markets across its southern border.
Trump has already imposed tariffs on multiple Canadian industries, including lumber, aluminum, steel, and automobiles. Just one day before the meeting, on Monday, the US president announced 25 percent tariffs on all imported heavy trucks effective November 1.
Carney, aged 60, entered the political arena less than a year ago, campaigning on his extensive crisis management expertise as a strategy to counter Trump's tariffs and annexation rhetoric.
While the majority of Canada-US trade remains protected under the USMCA—the free-trade agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico—Trump has called for revisions as the agreement approaches renegotiation.
Just last week, Trump revisited the possibility of annexing Canada during an address to US military leadership, discussing the country's potential involvement in a new "Golden Dome" missile defense system.
