Toxicology reports indicated extremely elevated blood alcohol content and cocaine presence in the victims' systems.
A Brazilian law enforcement officer and his spouse died from hyperthermia after immersing themselves in an overheated bathtub while intoxicated with alcohol and cocaine, according to official reports from Brazilian authorities.
Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, 37, who served as a military police officer, and his wife Ana Carolina Silva, 41, owner of a nail salon business, were discovered deceased at a motel located in Santa Catarina state on August 11, as reported by Brazilian news source G1 Globo and The New York Post.
The pair had been celebrating their daughter's fourth birthday earlier that day, during which they consumed alcoholic beverages and cocaine. Following the celebration, they visited a nightclub before checking into the Dallas Motel around midnight.
Family members became worried when the couple failed to retrieve their daughter the following day, which prompted them to file a missing persons report.
Investigators believe the couple experienced fatal heatstroke after spending time in an excessively hot bathtub while under the influence of substances, ultimately causing their deaths. Their bodies were later discovered in the motel bathtub.
Officials determined heatstroke as the primary cause of death, noting that the cocaine and alcohol in their systems likely impaired their ability to respond to the extreme heat conditions.
Investigations revealed that the water temperature in the bathtub had reached approximately 122 degrees Fahrenheit, with a space heater in the room also set to a high temperature.
"The cause of both fatalities was exogenous poisoning, facilitating the process of heatstroke with severe dehydration, thermal collapse, ultimately resulting in organ failure and death," stated Chief Medical Examiner Andressa Boer Fronza on Thursday.
Toxicology examinations detected cocaine residues and considerably high blood alcohol concentrations.
"Cocaine use, which alone in certain doses can induce torpor, drowsiness and potentially coma in individuals, combined with alcohol, which produces similar effects at high doses including torpor, coma and drowsiness," explained Dr. Fernando Oliva da Fonseca, Director of Forensic Medicine for the Scientific Police, to G1 Globo.
"When these substances are combined, the risk factor increases significantly, and that's precisely what may have occurred - the person enters a state of torpor at that temperature as it continues to rise, they don't perceive it and cannot mount a defensive reaction," the doctor further explained.
