Tragic Fall: Hiker Dies on Mount Nama After Removing Safety Rope for Photos

Witnesses reported the hiker removed his safety equipment and wasn't using an ice axe when the fatal slip occurred.

A 31-year-old hiker named Hong tragically lost his life on Mount Nama in China's Sichuan province after reportedly detaching his safety rope to capture photographs near the summit.

Hong was participating in a group hiking expedition on the 18,332-foot (5,588-metre) mountain on September 25, according to Channel News Asia. Eyewitnesses stated that Hong had removed his safety line and wasn't utilizing an ice axe when he lost footing on the snow-covered slope.

Footage circulating on social media showed Hong standing without safety protection near a snow-covered area close to the peak. While attempting to stabilize himself, he appeared to stumble. Moments later, he slid down the mountainside, disappearing from view as he fell approximately 656 feet (200 metres) before stopping out of camera range. Fellow hikers could be seen reacting with horror to the incident.

According to Chinese media outlet Red Star News, Hong tripped over his crampons while attempting to stand after disconnecting the safety rope. Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident.

Family members informed CNA that this was Hong's first visit to Mount Nama, estimating his fall ranged between 328-656 feet (100-200 metres).

Representatives from the Kangding Municipal Education and Sports Bureau confirmed that Hong and his group had neither shared their climbing plans nor obtained the mandatory permits. Following the accident, local authorities rapidly mobilized rescue operations.

Mount Nama, also referred to as Nama Peak, is a prominent mountain in the eastern Tibetan Plateau within Sichuan Province, forming part of the Gongga Mountain Range.

For anyone considering such a trek, proper preparation is crucial. Climbers must secure permits and adhere to local regulations. Employing local guides and porters enhances safety and simplifies logistics. Hikers should allocate time at lower elevations to acclimatize to the altitude. They must also be prepared for unexpected snowstorms and freezing temperatures.

The journey to the base camp covers approximately 15 km, with the final ascent becoming increasingly steep and technical. Climbers typically establish base camps around 4,800 metres elevation before attempting the summit. Essential equipment includes crampons, ice axes, ropes, and helmets. From the summit, climbers are rewarded with expansive views of surrounding mountains and valleys.
