US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about the potential for a Gaza peace deal, stating that Hamas is agreeing to "very important" issues as negotiations with Israel commence.
During an Oval Office press briefing, Trump addressed questions about preconditions for a deal, including whether Hamas would agree to disarm. "I have red lines, if certain things aren't met we're not going to do it," he stated, while adding, "But I think we're doing very well and I think Hamas has been agreeing to things that are very important."
The President shared his confidence as delegations from Hamas and Israel began indirect talks in Egypt focused on ending the conflict under his proposed 20-point plan.
"I think we're going to have a deal. It's a hard thing for me to say that when for years and years they've been trying to have a deal," Trump remarked. He further emphasized his conviction by stating, "We're going to have a Gaza deal, I'm pretty sure, yeah."
When questioned about reports suggesting he had criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for being negative about the negotiations, Trump dismissed these claims. He clarified that Netanyahu had actually been "very positive about the deal."
As the indirect talks proceed in Egypt, Trump's statements reflect a hopeful outlook on what has historically been an extremely challenging diplomatic endeavor.
