The Taliban leadership has imposed a ban on fibre optic internet services in an Afghan province to "prevent immorality," according to a spokesman for the administration on Tuesday.
This marks the first instance of such a prohibition since the Taliban took control in August 2021, leaving governmental departments, private businesses, public institutions, and residential areas in the northern Balkh province without WIFI internet access. However, mobile internet services continue to function normally.
Provincial government spokesman Haji Attaullah Zaid confirmed that cable internet access in Balkh has been completely suspended following a directive from leader Hibatullah Akhundzada.
"This action was implemented to prevent immorality, and an alternative solution will be developed within the country for essential needs," Zaid informed The Associated Press. He provided no additional details regarding why Balkh was specifically targeted for this ban or whether similar restrictions would be extended to other provinces.
Afghan authorities occasionally suspend mobile phone networks for security purposes, particularly during religious celebrations, to prevent the remote detonation of explosive devices.
