A 42-year-old San Francisco woman named Lisa Catalano has taken an unconventional approach to finding love by purchasing billboard space along California's Highway 101, one of the state's most congested routes.
Disillusioned with dating applications and unsuccessful matches, Catalano created a dedicated website called MarryLisa.com and prominently displayed it on digital billboards stretching from Santa Clara to South San Francisco. Her marketing campaign extends beyond highways, appearing on taxis traversing the Bay Area as well.
In her YouTube introduction video, Catalano explains: "Hi, I'm Lisa. I'm looking for love and I'm trying to find it alongside one of the San Francisco Bay Area's busiest highways. I wish I could say that this sounds a little bit less questionable the more I elaborate on it, but that's just not the case."
She further elaborates on her dating struggles: "It's been months since I've been on a date. I can't even get men to talk to me on any of the apps. I don't understand what's going on, but I figured it's time for a bold move. And what's bolder than running billboards on the side of a major highway to essentially market myself?"
Her website features comprehensive information including statistics, photographs, testimonials from friends and family members, extensive video content, and details about her desired partner qualities. The MarryLisa.com application includes questions about educational background, professional occupation, leisure activities, and personality traits, with an option for photo submission.
In an interview with People magazine, Catalano specified: "I want somebody who is looking for a committed, monogamous relationship who would like to try for starting a family. I'm looking for someone who leads a healthy lifestyle."
Catalano hopes to connect with someone sharing her political and religious values, preferably between 35 and 45 years old. Since launching her campaign on September 2, she has received approximately 1,800 submissions from men ranging in age from 19 to 78.
The billboard design features Catalano's photograph alongside the website address in bright yellow text against a black background. These advertisements rotate every eight seconds during peak commuting hours.
"I wanted something that was just very simple, to the point and a little bit eye-catching," she explained, noting that she intentionally avoided QR codes to prevent drivers from using their phones while driving.
Catalano's former fiancé passed away in 2023 following a prolonged battle with terminal illness. Regarding her return to dating, she commented: "It's a very strange process to try to get back into dating when you've been in a relationship for so long."
Despite the challenges, she remains optimistic: "I think that there's a guy out there who's a perfect fit for me, and I think I'm a perfect fit for him. We just have not connected yet."
