Intoxicated Passenger Arrested for Sexual Assault on Delta Employee After Flight Removal

Salt Lake City police have documented an increase in alcohol-related incidents involving disorderly passengers since the onset of the pandemic.

A troubling event took place at Salt Lake City International Airport where an intoxicated passenger allegedly committed sexual assault against a Delta Air Lines staff member. The 31-year-old passenger, identified as Cody Sierra Marie Bryne, reportedly grabbed and twisted the employee's breast while making verbal threats. This behavior led to her arrest with multiple charges including sexual battery, assault, and public intoxication, according to the New York Post.

The situation began when Bryne boarded a Delta flight destined for Portland, Oregon, and refused to clear the aisle. This prompted the pilot to request her removal from the aircraft. While being escorted off the plane, Bryne allegedly attempted to enter a secure airport area, physically assaulted another female passenger by grabbing her neck and pulling her hair. She then allegedly assaulted the Delta employee by grabbing and twisting her breast while shouting threatening remarks.

Following these actions, Bryne reportedly attempted to flee the airport but was apprehended while trying to purchase a ticket from another airline. During her arrest, she resisted being handcuffed, requiring two officers to successfully restrain her.

In her post-arrest interview, Bryne denied any physical assault against the Delta employee or other individuals, despite court documentation indicating she admitted to consuming alcohol earlier that morning and exhibited clear signs of severe intoxication. She remains in custody facing criminal charges and potential federal fines up to $37,000 for interference with flight crew operations.

Court documents stated, "[Bryne] was unable to hold an intelligible conversation, had the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from her person, had difficulty following directions, and needed assistance with walking."

Salt Lake City police have reported an increase in alcohol-related incidents involving unruly passengers since the pandemic began, resulting in higher arrest rates at the airport. Federal regulations permit fines up to $37,000 for individuals who interfere with flight crew duties.

A Delta spokesperson informed The Post, "Delta has zero tolerance for abusive, disruptive or unlawful behavior on our flights. The safety and security of our customers and crew is our highest priority, and we take all incidents seriously. While we do not comment on pending litigation, we are fully cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation proceeds."
