Sukhpreet Singh, a 25-year-old man of Indian origin, has been extradited to Canada after being arrested in Texas by the United States Marshals Service in connection with a 2021 assault case.
According to CTV News reports on Friday, Singh is one of several suspects wanted for the assault of Elnaz Hajtamiri that occurred in Canada in 2021. His arrest took place in June this year, with charges being filed against him in August.
Upon his extradition to York Region on Tuesday, Singh now faces serious charges including aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.
City News reported that authorities had issued a Canada-wide warrant for Singh in 2023 after identifying him as a suspect in the violent attack on Hajtamiri, which occurred in an underground parking garage located in Richmond Hill.
Prior to Singh's apprehension, four individuals, including Hajtamiri's former boyfriend Mohamad Lilo, had been charged in 2022 in relation to the assault, attempted murder, and attempted kidnapping. An additional three suspects were arrested in 2023 in connection with the same case.
With Singh's arrest, the total number of individuals charged in Hajtamiri's case has now reached eight.
Notably, Hajtamiri was abducted from Wasaga Beach on January 12, 2022, just weeks following the assault in Richmond Hill. York Regional Police and Ontario Provincial Police continue to investigate her disappearance and have offered a reward of CAD 100,000 for information leading to her whereabouts.
According to CTV News, the other individuals implicated in this case include Harshdeep Binner, Riyasat Singh, Harshpreet Sekhon, Akash Rana, and Jaspreet Singh.
