During the court proceedings, Sean 'Diddy' Combs expressed that he was "truly sorry" for his actions.
Music industry titan Sean "Diddy" Combs received a prison sentence exceeding four years on Friday following his conviction on prostitution-related charges.
While prosecutors had requested an 11-year incarceration period for Combs, Judge Arun Subramanian delivered a 50-month sentence after an emotional day-long hearing.
The legal team representing Combs had appealed to the judge for a 14-month sentence, which would have effectively counted as time already served, as the 55-year-old hip-hop mogul has been detained in Brooklyn for over a year.
Speaking to the court before sentencing, Combs stated he was "truly sorry" for his actions and implored the judge for "another chance."
"I ask your honor for mercy," he said. "I beg your honor for mercy."
A jury acquitted Combs in July of the most serious allegations against him—sex trafficking and racketeering—but found him guilty on two counts of transporting individuals across state lines for prostitution.
Combs's former girlfriend Casandra Ventura submitted correspondence to the judge requesting consideration of "the many lives that Sean Combs has upended with his abuse and control."
Ventura, the 39-year-old recording artist known professionally as Cassie, detailed the physical, emotional, and sexual abuse she endured during her more than decade-long relationship with Combs.
Both Ventura and another woman, identified only as Jane, testified they were coerced into participating in what were called "freak offs"—sexual marathon sessions with hired men that Combs directed and occasionally recorded.
"The entire courtroom watched actual footage of Combs kicking and beating me as I tried to run away from a freak off in 2016," Ventura wrote.
She revealed that she experiences nightmares and flashbacks "on a regular, everyday basis."
Ventura stated that she and her family had relocated from the New York area fearing potential "retribution" from Combs upon his release.
Addressing the court prior to sentencing, prosecutor Christy Slavik asserted that Combs has not acknowledged responsibility for his actions.
"His remorse was qualified. It's as though he thinks the law doesn't apply to him," Slavik remarked.
Slavik revealed that Combs had scheduled speaking engagements in Miami for the following week, anticipating a lenient sentence, which she characterized as "the height of hubris."
Advocating for a reduced sentence, Nicole Westmoreland, one of Combs's attorneys, described him as an "inspiration" to the Black community and a champion of social justice.
"No, Combs is not larger than life," she stated. "He's just a human being. He's made mistakes."
She emphasized his remorse and argued that "it's of no benefit to anyone to warehouse him in a prison."
All six of Combs's adult children delivered emotional pleas on their father's behalf, with eldest son Quincy Brown describing him as "a changed man."
"Please, please give our family the chance to heal together," urged one of his daughters, D'Lila Combs. "Not as headlines but as human beings."
