Alfred Nobel, a renowned Swedish businessman and chemist from the 19th century, established the prestigious Nobel Prizes that are set to announce their latest recipients next week.
These highly esteemed awards recognize extraordinary achievements across multiple disciplines including medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, economics, and peace, and are widely considered among the world's most distinguished honors.
The upcoming winners will join an illustrious list of previous laureates that includes such luminaries as Albert Einstein and Mother Teresa.
In the peace prize category, US President Donald Trump has received multiple nominations since 2018, both from within the United States and from international politicians. A Republican congresswoman also put forward his name in December for his role in establishing the Abraham Accords, which normalized diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab nations.
The Nobel Prizes originated with Alfred Nobel, who held over 300 patents during his lifetime. His most famous invention was dynamite, created by combining nitroglycerin with a compound that enhanced the explosive's stability.
Dynamite's widespread adoption in construction, mining, and weapons manufacturing generated substantial wealth for Nobel. In his later years, he decided to dedicate his fortune to funding annual prizes for individuals who "during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind."
The initial Nobel Prizes in medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, and peace were first awarded in 1901, five years after Nobel's death. The economics prize was added later in 1968 by Sweden's central bank. Though purists emphasize that the economics award is technically not a Nobel Prize, it is traditionally presented alongside the others.
The nomination process remains confidential, with committees not announcing nominees and judges prohibited from discussing their deliberations for 50 years. Nominators may choose to publicly disclose their recommendations, but self-nominations are not permitted. Individuals can receive multiple nominations from different sources, including committee members.
Each prize committee operates with slight variations, but all aim to honor Nobel's intention of recognizing contributions that benefit humanity.
The peace prize committee stands apart as the only one regularly acknowledging achievements from the previous year. It is also uniquely awarded in Oslo, Norway, while the science prizes are presented in Stockholm, Sweden. For scientific awards, recipients often wait decades for recognition, as judges ensure that breakthroughs demonstrate enduring significance.
The 2025 Nobel Prize announcements begin on Monday with the medicine prize, revealed by a panel at Stockholm's Karolinska Institute.
The schedule continues with physics on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday, literature on Thursday, the Peace Prize on Friday, and concludes with the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences on October 13.
Award ceremonies will take place on December 10, marking the anniversary of Nobel's death. Each prize includes 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1.2 million), an 18-carat gold medal, and a diploma. The prize money can be shared among up to three laureates per award.
