House Speaker Mike Johnson was confronted regarding Donald Trump's controversial remarks during his Quantico military address.
Democratic Representative Madeleine Dean from Pennsylvania's 4th Congressional District challenged Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday about President Donald Trump's contentious speech delivered to military generals at Quantico, Virginia.
"The president is unhinged. He is unwell," Dean stated publicly in front of cameras and onlookers, expressing concern that Trump's conduct might send problematic signals to American allies.
Johnson immediately responded with, "A lot of folks on your side are, too. I don't control him."
Dean emphasized that the president's recent address to military generals was "so dangerous," further noting, "Our allies are looking elsewhere. Our enemies are laughing."
"That is so dangerous. You know, I serve on Foreign Affairs and Appropriations. This is a collision of those two things," Dean continued. Johnson tersely replied, "I didn't see it."
The confrontation occurred following Trump's Tuesday appearance at Quantico Marine Corps Base, where he delivered a 72-minute address to hundreds of senior military officials as the government approached a potential spending shutdown.
Trump began his speech by claiming that under his administration, the US military was "reawakening the warrior spirit." However, the address quickly shifted to political topics, breaking with traditional presidential protocol of avoiding domestic politics when speaking to military personnel.
This deviation resulted in a notably prolonged silence from the audience, which Trump immediately acknowledged.
"I never walked into a room so silent before. If you want to applaud, you applaud. You can do anything you want," Trump remarked according to PEOPLE, adding, "If you don't like what I'm saying, you can leave the room. But, there goes your rank and there goes your future."
Before his Quantico appearance, Trump informed reporters that he planned to meet with top generals, admirals, and other military leaders, stating that if he disliked anyone during these meetings, he would terminate them immediately.
