Google Gemini Tops App Charts After Viral Nano Banana Trend, Surpasses OpenAI's ChatGPT
Google Gemini attracts over 23 million new users in two weeks.
Google Gemini has overtaken OpenAI's ChatGPT in popularity, largely due to its innovative Nano Banana AI image-editing feature. The app now leads both the App Store and Google Play Store rankings in India.
The Nano Banana model (technically called Gemini 2.5 Flash Image) has created a social media sensation with its ability to transform ordinary photos into artistic creations, vintage-style portraits, or highly detailed 3D renderings.
Users can generate or modify up to 100 images daily at no cost with custom prompts. For those with Gemini AI Pro or Ultra subscriptions, this limit extends to 1,000 images per day.
Since its debut last month, the Nano Banana feature has been used to modify more than 500 million photos according to Google.
Between August 26 and September 9, Gemini gained an impressive 23 million+ new users, demonstrating how quickly AI image-editing technology can drive widespread adoption.
Currently, Gemini holds the number one position in India on both major app stores. It also ranks as the top free app in the US App Store and stands at second place in Canada and the UK.
This surge has displaced ChatGPT in the rankings, which had previously dominated thanks to its own viral "Ghibli AI" trend.
Gemini joins DeepSeek as one of the few AI chatbot applications to dethrone OpenAI's ChatGPT, which has consistently led app store charts worldwide. This recent user spike further shows how viral phenomena can accelerate AI app adoption.
The trend has extended beyond everyday users and celebrities to include political figures. Following Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's sharing of his 3D figurine on X (formerly Twitter), Goa CM Pramod Sawant also participated in the trend.
Google Gemini's Nano Banana has fueled the popular "Hug My Younger Self" trend across social media platforms. Users are creating nostalgic Polaroid-style images showing their current selves embracing their younger versions.
Users can enhance results by adding more details to their prompts. This trend, blending creativity with nostalgia, has allowed people to recreate themselves in touching moments.
