Secretary of State Marco Rubio has issued a stern warning that the Trump administration will cancel US visas of immigrants who "glorify" political assassinations such as that of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The senior Trump official emphasized that it is illogical to permit immigrants to remain in the country if they engage in destructive and negative behavior.
"We should not be granting visas to individuals who come to the United States and celebrate the murder, execution, or assassination of a political figure. If such individuals are already present in the country, we should be revoking their visas," Rubio stated during an exclusive Fox News interview.
"What purpose does it serve to welcome people into our nation who will participate in destructive and negative conduct? It's completely illogical," he further remarked.
Rubio's warning followed a Friday statement from the State Department to visa applicants, cautioning that the Trump administration would be monitoring statements from those who "glorify violence" in the aftermath of Kirk's assassination and would take "appropriate action."
"In the wake of the horrific assassination of a prominent political figure, I want to emphasize that foreign nationals who glorify hatred and violence are not welcome visitors to our country," Deputy Secretary Chris Landau wrote on X.
The Deputy Secretary of State mentioned being "disgusted to see certain social media users praising, justifying, or trivializing the event," and has instructed consular officials to implement appropriate measures.
"Please don't hesitate to bring such comments by foreign nationals to my attention so that the @StateDept can safeguard the American people," he encouraged the public.
In June, the United States announced plans to monitor social media activities of visa applicants, requiring them to make their social media accounts "public." Since Trump's return to the White House in January, his administration has already canceled over 6,000 student visas for various infractions, including minor criminal records such as driving under the influence, burglary, or "support for terrorism" through participation in protests.
Kirk, a right-wing activist and influencer, was fatally shot in the neck on Wednesday while engaged in a debate before an audience at Utah Valley University. Approximately 33 hours after the shooting, authorities apprehended the 22-year-old suspect, Tyler Robinson, in Washington County, Utah, after family members assisted in identifying him from images released by investigators.
Utah authorities may file formal charges against Robinson in the fatal shooting case on Tuesday.
