Vladimir Putin Highlights Russia's Enduring Love for Indian Cinema and Bollywood

Russian President Vladimir Putin has openly declared his deep appreciation for Indian cinema during a recent address at the Valdai Discussion Group in Sochi.

"We love Indian cinema," stated Putin, highlighting that Russia may be the only country besides India itself that maintains a dedicated television channel broadcasting Indian films continuously throughout the day and night.

The Russian leader emphasized that the relationship between the two nations extends far beyond political and diplomatic realms, encompassing meaningful cultural and humanitarian connections. He noted the significant presence of Indian students in Russian educational institutions and how Russian citizens warmly embrace various aspects of Indian culture, particularly its cinema.

This cultural appreciation has historical roots dating back to the Soviet era, when Indian films gained immense popularity among Russian audiences. Legendary actors like Raj Kapoor and Mithun Chakraborty became household names across Russia, with their films resonating deeply with local viewers.

Russian audiences particularly connected with narratives featuring rags-to-riches journeys and the eternal struggle between good and evil. Notably, Mithun Chakraborty's 1982 film "Disco Dancer" achieved the distinction of becoming the highest-grossing Indian film in the Soviet Union. Together with Raj Kapoor's 1951 classic "Awaara," these remain the only two Indian films estimated to have sold over 100 million tickets in international markets.

Putin's admiration for Indian cinema isn't new. During a media briefing before the 2024 BRICS Summit, he specifically praised Bollywood, acknowledging Indian cinema as the most popular foreign film industry in Russia.

When questioned about potential incentives for BRICS nations to film in Russia, Putin emphasized India's significant cultural influence. "If we look at BRICS member states, I think in this country Indian films are most popular. We have a special TV channel with Indian movies being shown on it round the clock. We have a lot of interest in Indian films," he remarked at that time.

The Russian President also noted that cultural exchanges between BRICS countries were already well-established, with film festivals serving as important platforms for cultural diplomacy.

During that same briefing, Putin expressed openness to further collaboration with India's film industry, stating, "We are positive that if Indian films are interested then we will find some common ground and promote them in Russia."
