Trump Administration to Cut Federal Funding for Overseas Gender Identity and Diversity Programs

The Trump administration plans to halt federal funding for organizations and governments supporting gender identity or diversity work overseas, expanding the Mexico City Policy to include prohibitions on diversity, equity and inclusion programs. This policy will affect non-profits, foreign governments, and UN programmes as part of the administration's "America First" foreign policy approach.

US To Halt Funding For Organisations Supporting Trans And Diversity Work Overseas: Report

The prohibition would apply to non-profits, foreign governments and United Nations programmes.

According to Politico, the Trump administration is planning to stop federal funding for any organization or government that supports overseas work related to gender identity or diversity, as reported on Wednesday, citing a US official and nonprofit groups informed of the policy change.

The new restrictions are being considered an extension of the so-called Mexico City Policy, a Republican initiative that prevents overseas recipients of US health funding from providing or promoting abortion services, even when other funding sources cover those services, Politico reports.

The upcoming policy is expected to terminate US funding to American-based and foreign entities that support "diversity, equity and inclusion," which the Trump administration considers racial discrimination, or transgender programmes, which it views as detrimental to women, according to Politico.

This prohibition would extend to non-profits, foreign governments, and United Nations programmes.

When Reuters requested comment, a senior State Department official stated that the agency "continues to advance President Trump's American First foreign policy."

The official further mentioned that the State Department would "soon take additional steps to close loopholes that allowed taxpayer funding for promotion of abortion in previous iterations of the Mexico City Policy and expand the scope of the policy to ensure every penny of US foreign assistance prioritises American values, not the woke agenda."

According to the Politico article, two organizations - the Global Health Council and MSI Reproductive Choices - had been informed by the Trump administration about the details of its plans. When contacted by Reuters, these organizations did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
