New York City rapper Sheff G, whose legal name is Michael Williams, has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder and conspiracy charges.
The 27-year-old artist, who appeared at a Donald Trump campaign rally last year, was ordered to serve five years of supervised release following his prison term as part of Wednesday's sentencing agreement.
Williams accepted this sentence through an earlier guilty plea, despite prosecutors originally seeking a 20-year imprisonment.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez commented on the case, stating, "This defendant had talent and opportunity, but chose to use them to fuel violence instead of building a better future."
The popular rapper, whose music has garnered millions of views and streams across YouTube and Spotify, was arrested as part of a comprehensive investigation into gang-related shootings in Brooklyn. These allegations were public knowledge when he joined Trump onstage in May 2024.
The investigation has resulted in indictments against more than 30 alleged members of the 8 Trey Crips and their affiliate group, the 9 Ways gang. Twenty-three individuals have entered guilty pleas to various charges, while seven cases remain unresolved.
Fellow rapper Tegan Chambers, known professionally as Sleepy Hallow, was also implicated in the case. Chambers, who appeared with Trump and Sheff G during the Bronx rally on May 23, 2024, received a one-year jail sentence after pleading guilty to conspiracy.
When questioned about the rappers' legal troubles, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung responded with a quote: "As Sheff G said: 'They always whisper your accomplishments and shout your failures.'"
According to prosecutors, Williams used his music earnings to lavish gang members with money and jewelry during their conflicts with rival groups in Brooklyn.
Authorities allege he served as a getaway driver in at least one incident, transporting three co-defendants to and from a 2021 shooting that missed its intended target but injured two bystanders. Prosecutors also claim he celebrated a 2020 shooting that killed an alleged rival gang member and wounded five others by treating gang members to an expensive dinner at a Manhattan steakhouse.
The prosecution's case included evidence from surveillance footage, social media posts, text messages, and lyrics from the rappers' songs where they allegedly boasted about their criminal activities.
Arthur Aidala, Williams' attorney, did not immediately respond to requests for comment following the sentencing. Previously, he had stated that the plea agreement was in the "best interest of everyone involved."
Both Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow were among the notable figures Trump highlighted during his campaign events as he sought to appeal to Black voters in his successful bid to return to the White House.
