US Government Shutdown 2025: Impact on Visa Processing and Immigration Services

For the first time in seven years, the US government has entered a shutdown phase after Republicans and Democrats failed to reach a funding agreement. This has resulted in disruptions across multiple federal services.

The US Embassy in India addressed the situation on X, stating, "At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at US Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits."

According to Economic Times reporting, visa and passport processing times have historically slowed during previous government shutdowns.

Embassies worldwide have announced that public communications, social media updates, and general notices will be suspended, with exceptions only for urgent safety or security alerts.

During government shutdowns, federal agencies are restricted from spending beyond emergency needs, causing nonessential functions to remain suspended until Congress reinstates funding.

Approximately 750,000 federal employees are expected to face furlough, with some potentially being terminated by President Donald Trump's Republican administration. Numerous offices may close, possibly permanently, as Trump has warned about implementing "irreversible" measures. While his deportation initiatives are expected to continue at full capacity, educational, environmental, and other services will likely experience significant disruptions. The economic consequences are anticipated to affect the entire nation.

This marks the third government funding lapse under Trump's leadership and the first since his return to office this year.
