US President Donald Trump has reiterated his claim of mediating a truce between India and Pakistan during their military conflict earlier this year. During a meeting with military leaders in Quantico, Trump stated that Pakistan's Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, praised him for "saving millions of lives" by preventing further escalation of hostilities.
Trump recounted his recent meeting with Pakistani leadership at the White House, saying, "The prime minister of Pakistan was here along with the field marshal, who's a very important guy in Pakistan. He said to a group of people, 'This man saved millions of lives because he saved the war from going on.'"
The US President expressed appreciation for Munir's comments, stating, "That war was going to get very bad. I was very honoured. I love the way he said it. Susie Wiles was there. She said that was the most beautiful thing. But we saved a lot of them."
Trump also claimed his administration has resolved 'seven wars' during his nine months in office, adding, "And yesterday we might have settled the biggest of them all, although I don't know, Pakistan and India were very big, both nuclear powers. I settled that," referencing his proposed Gaza peace deal.
According to Trump, he had warned both India and Pakistan that he would cease trade relations if they continued hostilities. He recalled telling them, "You go into this freaking war that I'm hearing about," and mentioned that seven planes were shot down, without specifying which country's aircraft he was referring to.
The conflict between India and Pakistan intensified in May when India launched Operation Sindoor following a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22 that killed 26 civilians. As part of this operation, Indian forces targeted terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
A ceasefire was announced on May 10, with Trump claiming credit for its negotiation. However, India has maintained that the cessation of hostilities was arranged after Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations contacted his Indian counterpart for direct discussions.
While Pakistan initially denied Trump's involvement, they later acknowledged it and nominated him for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his "decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership during the recent India-Pakistan crisis."
