The US President warned of potential new sanctions against Russia if Moscow continues to obstruct peace negotiations.
Washington:
US President Donald Trump, who previously boasted he could resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict within hours, now describes the animosity between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as "unfathomable" as American peace initiatives continue. The Republican president has also explicitly identified Russia as the aggressor in the conflict, signaling his increasingly firm position toward Moscow.
"I managed to end seven wars - I believed this would be straightforward for me, but it has proven quite challenging," Trump stated to reporters on Monday.
"The animosity between Zelensky and Putin is beyond comprehension... their mutual hatred is so intense they can hardly breathe. They detest each other so deeply that conversation is nearly impossible. They simply cannot communicate with one another."
During his 2023-2024 presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly claimed he would terminate the Ukrainian conflict either within 24 hours of returning to the White House or even sooner. However, nine months into his presidency, his peace efforts have yet to yield results.
Until recently, Trump has avoided directly condemning Russia for the invasion, with his administration even aligning with Putin in February to oppose a UN resolution supporting Ukraine's territorial integrity and condemning Moscow.
This stance appears to be shifting amid Trump's growing frustration with Putin over the prolonged conflict. On Sunday, referring to military casualties, Trump remarked, "8,000 soldiers have perished this week from both nations. Slightly more from Russia, but when you're the aggressor, your losses are greater."
Trump also cautioned that Washington might need to implement stronger measures if Moscow continues to impede peace negotiations. He indicated his readiness to impose sanctions on Moscow, provided that all NATO allies agree to completely cease Russian oil purchases and implement their own sanctions.
