On Sunday, a host from the conservative program Fox & Friends issued an apology after suggesting that mentally ill homeless individuals should receive lethal injections, acknowledging his statement was "extremely callous."
Brian Kilmeade's remarks sparked widespread backlash across media platforms.
The controversial comment occurred during a Wednesday broadcast discussing the murder of a Ukrainian woman in North Carolina. While co-host Lawrence Jones suggested mentally ill homeless people should either accept treatment or face incarceration, Kilmeade responded: "Or, involuntary lethal injection - or something. Just kill them."
The murder suspect, a 34-year-old man with an extensive criminal history, has been charged in the case. His mother informed local news outlets that he had previously been involuntarily committed and diagnosed with schizophrenia.
"I apologize for that extremely callous remark," Kilmeade stated during his on-air apology.
"I am obviously aware that not all mentally ill, homeless people act as the perpetrator did in North Carolina, and that so many homeless people deserve our empathy and compassion."
Fox News, which broadcasts Fox & Friends, did not immediately respond when asked for comment on the situation.
