Tang Renjian, former Chinese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, received a death sentence with reprieve for bribery charges at a Jilin province court on Sunday, as reported by state media Xinhua.
According to Xinhua, Tang accepted bribes totaling over 268 million yuan ($37.6 million) in cash and property while serving in various government positions between 2007 and 2024.
The Changchun Intermediate People's Court issued a two-year suspension of Tang's death sentence, acknowledging his confession to the corruption charges.
Tang was expelled from China's Communist Party in November 2024, following a six-month investigation by anti-corruption authorities that had resulted in his removal from office.
The investigation into Tang moved at an unusually rapid pace and followed similar probes targeting defense minister Li Shangfu and his predecessor Wei Fenghe.
Since 2020, President Xi Jinping has intensified anti-corruption efforts within China's domestic security apparatus, aiming to ensure that police, prosecutors, and judges demonstrate "absolute loyalty, purity, and reliability."
Prior to his ministerial appointment, Tang served as governor of western Gansu province from 2017 to 2020, according to official biography records.
In January, President Xi emphasized that corruption remains the greatest threat facing China's Communist Party and continues to increase despite ongoing efforts to combat it.
