Democrats have criticized Trump for targeting his opponents in a manner reminiscent of authoritarian regimes.
Washington:
President Donald Trump recently declared "I hate my opponent," and now appears to be translating those words into action.
The indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, a vocal Trump critic, represents the most prominent confirmation of Trump's repeated promises to seek retribution against political enemies.
However, the Republican president has made it abundantly clear that this is merely the beginning. During a Friday White House press briefing, Trump called for additional prosecutions of his adversaries, continuing his pattern of breaking traditional American political norms.
"I hope there will be others," Trump told reporters, characterizing Comey as a "dirty cop."
Trump has long harbored resentment toward Comey regarding the FBI investigation into potential collusion between Trump's 2016 campaign and Russia.
Democratic critics argue that Trump's approach to targeting opponents mirrors tactics employed in authoritarian systems.
Andrew Bates, who served as senior deputy press secretary in President Joe Biden's White House, noted that Trump was already "historically unpopular" due to his inability to address "costs, chaos and corruption that he promised to fight."
"I don't see the genius in following that up with 'watch me spit on George Washington's memory so I can dress up like Kim Jong Un,'" Bates remarked to AFP.
Trump's administration maintains that their actions are not about weaponizing justice - the very accusation they leveled against Biden.
"It's about justice really, it's not revenge," Trump insisted during the White House press briefing. "They are sick, radical left people, and they can't get away with it."
Yet earlier statements on his Truth Social platform revealed the personal nature of his grievances: "James 'Dirty Cop' Comey was a destroyer of lives."
By "lives," Trump was referring to his own experiences with what he calls the Russia "witch-hunt" and the various criminal and civil charges following his 2020 election defeat and the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots.
Critics now argue that Trump himself is orchestrating a witch hunt since returning to office. He has utilized presidential power in unprecedented ways, compelling law firms, universities, federal employees, and media outlets to acquiesce to his demands.
He has also appointed allies to top positions in the justice system, including conspiracy theorist Kash Patel as the current FBI Director.
This revenge campaign has now entered a new phase where Trump's opponents face potential imprisonment.
The American Civil Liberties Union described Comey's indictment as "the latest in a series of Trump Administration actions targeting political opponents of the president and exploiting the powers of the federal government to do so."
Trump has also abandoned any pretense of maintaining the traditional separation between the White House and the Justice Department - a boundary American presidents have respected since the Watergate scandal forced Richard Nixon's resignation in the 1970s.
Over the weekend, Trump publicly criticized Attorney General Pam Bondi for failing to take action against Comey and others - and witnessed his wishes fulfilled within days.
Future targets may include former New York state prosecutor Letitia James, who brought a civil fraud case against Trump, and California Senator Adam Schiff, who led the prosecution during the president's first impeachment in 2019.
The Justice Department is reportedly pursuing charges against John Bolton, Trump's former national security advisor turned critic, whose home was recently raided by FBI agents.
"It's not a list but I think there will be others," Trump stated on Friday.
Trump made his attitude toward perceived enemies explicitly clear earlier this month at the funeral of assassinated right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.
Noting that the combative Kirk had nonetheless wished his opponents well, Trump remarked: "That's where I disagreed with Charlie. I hate my opponent and I don't want the best for them."
