Deadly Gold Mine Collapse in Nigeria Claims Over 100 Lives: Illegal Mining Crisis in Zamfara State

Reports indicate that more than 100 individuals are feared dead after a gold mining pit collapsed in Nigeria's Zamfara State, according to survivors and local residents who spoke on Friday.

The catastrophic incident occurred on Thursday at the Kadauri mining site in the Maru local government area, when the pit suddenly caved in while numerous artisanal miners were working below ground, eyewitnesses informed Reuters. Rescue operations continued throughout Friday.

Sanusi Auwal, a community member participating in rescue efforts, confirmed that at least 13 bodies had been recovered from the debris, including his cousin's remains. "Over 100 miners were involved during the collapse," Auwal stated during a phone interview with Reuters.

Survivor Isa Sani, currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries, recounted the harrowing experience: "We are lucky to be rescued alive. Out of more than 100 people, only 15 of us were rescued."

Muhammadu Isa from the Zamfara State miners association verified the incident, adding that some rescuers also suffocated while attempting to extract victims from the collapsed mine.

Zamfara police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar did not immediately respond when contacted for comment through calls and text messages.

Unauthorized mining is a common problem in Zamfara, where armed gangs frequently control gold fields, contributing to ongoing violence and deadly accidents in the region.
