Italy's Deputy PM Antonio Tajani Endorses India-EU Free Trade Agreement Finalization at UN Meeting

Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani has engaged with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal during the UN General Assembly session in New York, where he expressed Rome's dedication to finalizing the Free Trade Agreement between India and the European Union.

On Thursday, Antonio Tajani shared on X that the meeting was "important" and announced his plans to visit India in the upcoming months. "In New York, I also had important meetings with the Indian Foreign Minister @DrSJaishankar and the Commerce Minister @PiyushGoyal," Tajani stated.

"Italy and India share a strategic political and economic partnership that we intend to strengthen with my further visit to India in the coming months," he further noted.

Emphasizing India's significance, he mentioned, "...for this reason I wanted the 'India' measure of 500 million euros to support our exporting companies".

"I confirmed Italy's support for a rapid finalisation of the Free Trade Agreement," he concluded.

The European Union (EU) holds the position of India's second-largest trading partner, with goods trade valued at EUR 120 billion in 2024, constituting 11.5 percent of India's total trade. Meanwhile, India ranks as the EU's 9th largest trading partner, representing 2.4 percent of the EU's total goods trade in 2024.
