US Confirms Non-Interventionist Stance on Kashmir: "A Direct Issue Between India and Pakistan"

A senior US State Department official has declared that Kashmir remains a "direct issue" between India and Pakistan, emphasizing that the United States has no intention of inserting itself into this bilateral matter.

During a press briefing, the official reaffirmed America's "long-standing policy" of viewing the Kashmir situation as an issue for India and Pakistan to resolve directly. The official noted that while US President Donald Trump is dealing with "enough crises on his hands," he would be willing to assist if requested by both nations.

"We will leave that up to India and Pakistan to solve," the official stated clearly.

The State Department representative emphasized that the US approaches its relationships with India and Pakistan separately, guided by an "America First policy that advances our interest." This approach recognizes the distinct bilateral relationships the US maintains with each country.

However, the official did reference President Trump's statements at the United Nations General Assembly, where Trump claimed credit for stopping a conflict between the two South Asian neighbors. The official asserted that "it is a fact that the United States was involved in that crisis and absolutely helped broker that ceasefire."

India has consistently maintained its position that third-party involvement in discussions with Pakistan, particularly regarding terrorism, is unwelcome. New Delhi firmly believes these matters must remain strictly bilateral.

On May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. The Indian Armed Forces targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, reportedly resulting in over 100 terrorist casualties.

Since May 10, Trump has repeatedly claimed that he "helped settle" tensions between the neighboring countries by promising increased trade relations if they resolved their conflict. India has refuted these claims, stating that the ceasefire was achieved through direct military communications between Indian and Pakistani forces, without US mediation.
