The XL Bully dog had been a family pet for four years before the tragic incident occurred.
A devastating tragedy unfolded in East Heslerton, North Yorkshire, where 10-year-old Savannah Bentham lost her life following an attack by her family's pet XL Bully dog, according to reports from The Metro.
The fatal incident happened in November last year when Savannah was temporarily alone watching television with the six-year-old dog named Biggie. Her mother had stepped out briefly from their static caravan to seek assistance with a gas canister connection, while her father was away at work.
Upon returning, Savannah's mother discovered a horrific scene—her daughter lying on the floor with severe injuries and the dog covered in blood. Despite emergency services being summoned immediately and bystanders attempting to provide aid, Savannah tragically succumbed to neck injuries at the scene.
A recent inquest into the incident revealed that, according to Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Wilkinson, the dog had never previously displayed aggressive behavior and was typically described as calm and lazy by the family.
Although XL Bully dogs are classified as banned under the United Kingdom's dangerous dog legislation, the family had legally maintained ownership of Biggie through exemption regulations. They had fulfilled all legal obligations, including properly registering the dog, having it neutered and microchipped, and ensuring it wore a muzzle when in public spaces.
Despite these safety measures, the dog fatally attacked Savannah when they were alone. With no witnesses to the attack, the dog was subsequently euthanized. A post-mortem examination of the animal revealed no health issues or physical conditions that might explain a sudden onset of aggressive behavior.
Jon Heath, North Yorkshire's senior coroner, concluded that Savannah died as a result of injuries inflicted by the family dog.
In a statement released through North Yorkshire Police, Savannah's grieving family expressed, "We are utterly shocked and devastated by what happened to Savannah. We can't believe we have lost our wonderful girl who we love so much."
