President Trump's concerns about trade imbalances with Asian nations have caused significant uncertainty across the region.

Washington:

According to two government officials and another individual briefed on the situation, arrangements are being made for President Donald Trump to visit Japan next month.

A visit to Tokyo would provide an opportunity to engage with America's closest East Asian ally and key partner on trade and security matters, as both nations continue to work through the implementation details of their tariff agreement.

This trip would also present the Republican president with his first chance to meet the successor of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who is preparing to leave office.

Officials emphasized that no presidential trip is considered official until formally announced, and schedules remain subject to change.

Requests for comment from the White House and Japan's foreign ministry received no immediate response.

President Trump is already scheduled to travel to Asia to participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders' meeting taking place October 31-November 1 in Gyeongju, South Korea.

During this visit, Trump mentioned last week that he plans to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping for their first in-person discussions since Trump returned to the presidency in January.

The potential Japan visit would likely be scheduled before the South Korea trip, according to officials.

Trump's emphasis on perceived trade imbalances with Asian countries has created uncertainty throughout the region, particularly affecting export-dependent nations like Japan.

Prime Minister Ishiba negotiated a framework trade agreement with Trump to prevent increased tariffs on Japanese exports to the United States, though numerous issues remain unresolved. These include promised Japanese investments in American industries and further threatened action by Trump regarding pharmaceutical and semiconductor imports globally.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has indicated that Trump is also expected to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, scheduled for October 26-28.
