China Backs United Nations Amid Trump's Criticism, Emphasizes Global Stability Role
China has voiced strong support for the United Nations, emphasizing the organization's crucial role in maintaining global stability, directly countering US President Donald Trump's harsh criticism delivered during his address at the UN General Assembly.
During a Wednesday press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun highlighted the UN's significant achievements throughout its 80-year history. He stated that the United Nations has fulfilled an irreplaceable function in protecting international peace and security while advancing global development initiatives.
"China consistently believes that in our turbulent world, it is increasingly vital to uphold and defend the UN's authority," Guo remarked to reporters at the media briefing.
His statement came as a direct response to Trump's pointed criticism of the United Nations during the President's address to the General Assembly in New York.
While Trump later expressed "100 percent support" for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, he delivered substantial criticism of the organization itself. "It is not even coming close to living up to that potential," Trump declared, suggesting the UN fails to achieve concrete outcomes. "For the most part, at least for now, all they seem to do is write a really strongly worded letter and then never follow that letter. It's empty words and empty words don't solve wars."
China, both a founding member of the United Nations and a permanent Security Council member, reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to the organization's central position in global governance. "China stands ready to work with other member states to renew the founding mission of the UN, reaffirm the commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and revitalize the UN's authority and vigour in the new era, so as to play a bigger role for safeguarding world peace, promoting common development and building a community with a shared future for humanity," Guo stated.
The spokesperson also emphasized China's contributions to UN-led programs. Premier Li Qiang, currently participating in the UNGA sessions in New York, spoke at a high-level meeting regarding the Global Development Initiative (GDI). This initiative, first proposed by President Xi Jinping in 2021, aims to foster shared prosperity and has garnered widespread international backing.
According to Guo, the initiative has attracted participation from over 130 countries and international organizations, becoming a widely endorsed international public good.
