French President Emmanuel Macron cautioned against embracing a "survival of the fittest" mentality in global politics during his address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
The French leader offered a robust defense of international institutions following President Donald Trump's harsh critique of the United Nations in his own speech to the assembly.
"The major risk of our era is witnessing the survival of the fittest prevail. It's the danger of allowing the self-interest of a few to dominate," Macron stated.
"We shouldn't use the world's complexity as an excuse to abandon our principles and aspirations. In many ways, we're at a paradoxical moment. We need to revive the collaborative spirit that emerged 80 years ago more urgently than ever."
Macron observed that "those who criticize the UN most severely are typically those seeking to alter the rules because they wish to exercise dominance."
During his address, the French President also explained his diplomatic initiatives supporting Ukraine and his decision to recognize Palestinian statehood, which he had announced from the same platform on Monday.
"France stands with Ukraine and works for peace in the Middle East precisely because we reject double standards," he said.
Macron expressed appreciation for Trump's apparent evolution regarding Ukraine, as the US President suggested for the first time that Kyiv might not only reclaim its original territory but potentially advance further.
"I appreciate the US President's confidence in Ukraine's capabilities," Macron remarked.
