A former press secretary of Jill Biden, wife of former US President Joe Biden, has criticized their administration and the workplace atmosphere that prevailed during their White House tenure.
Michael LaRosa, who worked as Jill Biden's spokesperson from early 2021 to mid-2022, described the "Biden Bubble" as being characterized by loyalty enforcement, intimidation, and clique formation—behaviors that stood in stark contrast to the former President's public messaging about empathy and decency.
In an opinion piece published by Fox News, he stated that the Biden administration "was full of bullies".
Mr LaRosa compared his job experience more to high school "mean girls" drama than public service. He alleged that internal power dynamics shifted based on who was in favor. Employees reportedly operated within a cult-like environment where devotion to the president and first lady took precedence over actual performance or truthfulness.
"Inside the White House, the Regina Georges of Biden's circle controlled like mean girls and enforced loyalty," Mr LaRosa remarked, referencing actress Rachael McAdams' antagonistic character from the popular film 'Mean Girls.'
He described Joe and Jill Biden as "warm, decent, empathetic" individuals who nevertheless unintentionally allowed "some of the nastiest and most mean-spirited people I've ever encountered in politics" to operate within their inner circle.
Mr LaRosa noted that his observations align with statements made in former Vice President Kamala Harris's forthcoming memoir, '107 Days,' scheduled for release on Tuesday, according to The New York Post.
Based on excerpts, Harris portrays White House staff as uncomfortable with her apparent success, allegedly undermining her and circulating unfavorable rumors, particularly as her profile grew.
While Mr LaRosa does not specifically name all individuals involved in the alleged behavior, he does identify Anthony Bernal, Jill Biden's chief of staff, as someone widely considered both powerful and controversial within the White House.
Often described as Jill Biden's "work husband," Bernal was regarded as one of the most influential first lady chiefs of staff in US history. According to numerous employees, he was difficult to work with and exhibited bullying behavior.
Mr LaRosa claimed he was told that Joe Biden "has to run because she [Harris] can't." He further encouraged Harris to continue speaking with "unfiltered candour about her experience" which could help bridge the gap between perception and reality.
