Los Angeles police has charged Nick Reiner for the brutal double homicides of his parents.
Hollywood legend Rob Reiner's son Nick Reiner, who struggles with drug addiction and stands accused of murdering his parents, had a significant altercation at talk show host Conan O'Brien's Christmas celebration on Saturday, according to American media sources. The "very loud argument" between Nick and his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, reportedly "freaked out" all party attendees and left the Reiners fearful about Nick's potential subsequent actions, as reported by the New York Post citing multiple sources.
This heated confrontation, occurring less than 24 hours before the acclaimed Hollywood director and his wife were discovered deceased at their Brentwood residence, may have erupted because Nick had relapsed and was refusing another attempt at rehabilitation after reportedly having undergone at least 17 treatment programs since age 15, sources indicate.
"Nick was alarming everyone with his erratic behavior, acting unstable, and repeatedly questioning people if they were celebrities," a source revealed to People magazine.
A family acquaintance residing near the Reiners' home informed The New York Post that following the dispute at Conan's holiday gathering, the "When Harry Met Sally" director had expressed to others that the family feared for Nick and were concerned about his deteriorating mental condition.
"Nick was supposedly clean," but subsequently rumors emerged suggesting he was "not actually abstaining," the neighbor stated. They also mentioned that the accused son, during his most challenging periods over the years, was "severely addicted to a combination of opiates and heroin."
Another family friend said, "I know [the parents] wanted him to seek treatment and enter rehab, but he preferred receiving help while remaining at home – he refused treatment at a facility.
"And I'm aware they've been disagreeing about this matter for years."
The bodies of the 78-year-old actor-director and his 70-year-old wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found in their upscale Brentwood neighborhood residence in Los Angeles on Sunday, with numerous reports indicating they had been fatally stabbed or had their throats cut.
Hours later on Monday, Los Angeles police charged their son, Nick Reiner, 32, for the horrific double murders that shocked film enthusiasts worldwide.
Los Angeles police chief Jim McDonnell informed reporters that the younger Reiner was apprehended shortly after authorities were alerted.
"He was subsequently arrested for murder and remains in custody," McDonnell stated.
Nick Reiner, who has battled substance abuse since his adolescent years, had reportedly argued with his parents at a prominent Hollywood event on Saturday evening, according to media reports.
Entertainment source TMZ reported that the bodies were discovered Sunday afternoon by the couple's daughter, who informed police that another family member had killed them.
As condolences flooded in from entertainers and political figures, Donald Trump issued an extraordinary statement, suggesting that Reiner had provoked his own murder through his criticism of the U.S. president.
Trump claimed the Reiners had died "reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME."
"He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession," the Republican leader wrote.
Later, he reinforced his position, telling reporters that Reiner was "very bad for our country".
