The US Embassy in Dhaka has issued a nationwide security alert for American citizens following Bangladesh's announcement of parliamentary elections and a national referendum scheduled for February 12, 2026.
Washington DC:
The United States Embassy in Dhaka has released a security alert for American citizens throughout Bangladesh after officials announced the country's next parliamentary election and national referendum will be held simultaneously on February 12, 2026.
In Monday's advisory, the US Embassy indicated that political rallies and demonstrations are expected to increase as the election approaches. The embassy cautioned that even peaceful gatherings could potentially turn violent. American citizens in Bangladesh were advised to maintain vigilance, stay away from demonstrations and large crowds, follow local media updates, and remain aware of their surroundings.
This warning follows the Bangladesh Election Commission's formal announcement of the schedule for the country's upcoming national elections last week. Voting for all 300 parliamentary seats will coincide with a national referendum, marking Bangladesh's first-ever twin polls.
The February 2026 election carries significant political weight as it represents the first national vote since the student-led uprising that removed former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. Since that transition, the country has operated under an interim government led by Nobel Peace Prize recipient Muhammad Yunus.
According to the election timeline, candidates will submit their nomination papers on December 29, 2025. The campaign period will run from January 22, 2026, until 48 hours before election day.
In addition to the parliamentary election, voters will participate in a national referendum on the proposed "July Charter." This charter aims to implement major reforms to state institutions, including limitations on executive power and enhancements to judicial independence, and represents a crucial component of the post-2024 political transition.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin revealed the election schedule during a televised address broadcast on state media channels Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar. He emphasized that the Election Commission is working to ensure the polls will be conducted in a free, fair, and inclusive manner.
The US Embassy has advised American citizens in Bangladesh to contact the embassy in Dhaka for consular assistance if needed, and reiterated guidance to avoid locations where protests or political activities are occurring.
