Trump to File Lawsuit Against BBC for Alleged Manipulation of Capitol Riot Speech

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to file a lawsuit against the BBC over allegations that the broadcaster edited his 2021 speech before the Capitol riots in a misleading manner. The controversy has already led to high-profile resignations at the BBC, with Trump claiming the edited footage falsely portrayed him as explicitly encouraging supporters to attack the Capitol. This latest legal threat follows Trump's pattern of confronting media organizations over their coverage.

Trump Says He Will File Lawsuit Against BBC Today

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday his intention to file a lawsuit against the BBC for allegedly editing his 2021 speech to supporters prior to the US Capitol incident.

"We'll be filing that suit probably this afternoon or tomorrow morning," Trump informed reporters during an Oval Office meeting, approximately a month after initially threatening a billion-dollar defamation complaint against the British broadcaster.

"Literally, they put words in my mouth," the 79-year-old Republican president claimed, suggesting the BBC utilized "AI or something" to fabricate his statements, though he provided no evidence to support this accusation.

The British Broadcasting Corporation, which has a global audience extending well beyond the United Kingdom, has faced significant internal turmoil following these allegations about "Panorama," their flagship current affairs program.

In the lead-up to the 2024 US presidential election, the program broadcast segments from Trump's January 6, 2021 speech.

The controversial video combined two separate sections of Trump's address in a manner that created the impression he explicitly encouraged supporters to storm the Capitol, where lawmakers were in session to certify Joe Biden's 2020 election victory.

A major controversy erupted regarding the edited footage in early November, resulting in the resignations of both the BBC director-general and the organization's senior news executive.

The BBC has rejected Trump's allegations of legal defamation, and BBC chairman Samir Shah has sent Trump a formal letter of apology.

Nevertheless, the American president has previously filed or threatened legal action against several media outlets in the United States, some of which have resulted in multi-million-dollar settlements.
