New Delhi:
Following one of Australia's most devastating mass shootings in recent history, social media rapidly circulated footage showing a man suddenly rushing from behind to tackle a gunman at Sydney's Bondi Beach. This brave individual wrapped his arms around the attacker and wrestled away a firearm while shots continued to ring out. The public quickly celebrated him as a hero, with Ahmed Al Ahmed's name spreading widely across platforms, though some details about him were initially misreported.
Ahmed Al Ahmed, who is in his 40s and courageously confronted and disarmed one of the attackers during Sunday night's antisemitic attack on a Jewish gathering at Bondi, is actually the owner of a tobacco and specialty convenience store that he has operated since 2021, not a fruit seller from Sydney's Sutherland Shire as early reports claimed.
As Australians sought ways to express gratitude following the attack that claimed at least 15 lives and left dozens wounded, the misidentification spread quickly. Some well-intentioned individuals mistakenly directed their support messages to a fruit business in southern Sydney, believing it was owned by Al Ahmed.
The misidentified business, Sutherland Best Fresh, promptly issued a correction: "So sad to see this tragedy happen this afternoon in Bondi," the owners wrote in a Facebook post on Monday morning. "There has been a miscommunication... on where this great Australian hero's fruit shop location is. We do not know who Ahmed is, nor the location of his fruit shop. We congratulate this hero and wish him a speedy recovery. Praying for those who have been affected."
Meanwhile, Al Ahmed was recovering in the hospital after sustaining two gunshot wounds during his heroic confrontation. His actions, captured on video and broadcast across Australian and international media, are widely credited with preventing additional casualties.
The attack began shortly after 6:45 pm (local time) on Sunday, when thousands of beachgoers were enjoying Bondi Beach at the end of a summer day. Among the crowd were hundreds of people attending "Chanukah by the Sea," a public celebration marking the beginning of the eight-day Hanukkah festival, held in a small park near the beachfront.
Witnesses reported to police that two gunmen initiated the attack from an elevated footbridge leading to the beach. Video footage showed people in swimwear fleeing across the sand as gunshots echoed through the area. The attack continued for approximately 10 minutes before police intervention.
It was during this chaotic scene that Al Ahmed, who had gone to Bondi with a friend for coffee, encountered one of the attackers at close range.
In an interview with Australia's ABC, his father, Mohamed Fateh Al Ahmed, explained that his son and his friend were shocked upon arriving to find armed men firing into crowds.
"Their lives were in danger," he stated. "He noticed one of the armed men at a distance."
According to family members, Al Ahmed observed people lying on the ground, many bleeding heavily. At that moment, his father explained, instinct took over.
"When he saw people laying on the ground and the blood everywhere, immediately his conscience and his soul compelled him to pounce on one of the terrorists and rid him of his weapon," Mohamed Fateh Al Ahmed recounted.
