US officials announced Sunday that an individual detained in connection with the fatal shooting at Brown University would be released, as authorities resume their search for the suspect.

The shooting occurred Saturday at the prestigious Ivy League institution located in Providence, Rhode Island. The gunman opened fire in a building where examinations were in progress, prompting a campus-wide lockdown and initiating an extensive manhunt that lasted several hours.

Early Sunday, authorities had detained a person of interest related to the mass shooting that resulted in the deaths of two students and injured nine others. This incident represents yet another entry in the troubling sequence of school attacks that have plagued the United States.

Brown University President Christina Paxson issued a letter confirming that all 11 victims were students of the institution.

"We will shortly be releasing the person of interest who was detained earlier today," Providence Mayor Brett Smiley stated on Sunday.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha explained to reporters, "It's fair to say there is no basis to consider him a person of interest. That's why he's being released."

Officials indicated they would continue pursuing the actual suspect but provided minimal details regarding the progress of their investigation.

"Obviously we have a murderer at large, frankly, so we're not going to reveal our strategy," Neronha remarked.

Law enforcement released a brief 10-second video footage of the suspect, captured from behind, walking rapidly along an empty street after firing shots inside a ground floor classroom.
