Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan experienced a frightening proximity to the terror attack at Bondi Beach, Sydney, on Sunday. The incident targeted a Jewish Hanukkah celebration and resulted in 15 casualties, including a 10-year-old child.
Currently in Australia for Ashes coverage, Vaughan revealed in his opinion piece that he and his family were merely "a few hundred metres from the attack" and found themselves in lockdown inside Totti's restaurant as the situation unfolded. He described the experience as deeply unsettling, stating, "To be so close that you can hear it happening is terrifying."
Vaughan characterized the incident as "a horrific attack" that would "devastate families forever." He mentioned that he was staying with his family in the adjacent suburb of Coogee.
Reflecting on how terrorism typically seems remote when viewed through media, even in familiar locations, Vaughan noted, "That all feels very close to home and is scary. But to be so close that you can hear it happening is terrifying."
Initially, Vaughan misinterpreted the emergency sirens, thinking they signaled something less serious. "Usually, when you hear that sound on the beach, it's sharks or a couple of well-oiled blokes brawling," he wrote. He quickly realized the gravity of the situation.
While outside a nearby pub, Vaughan recounted how a security guard urgently intervened: "The bouncer walked over with his hands in a gun sign and told me to get inside." Subsequently, the restaurant implemented lockdown procedures, preventing anyone from leaving until authorities declared the area safe.
Vaughan described being confined indoors for approximately two hours. "You know what's happening around you, but you don't want to believe it's happening," he wrote, noting the "very sombre atmosphere."
Accompanied by his wife, her sister, his two daughters and a friend, Vaughan attempted to maintain composure for the younger members of his party.
"It's the day after, when you think that we could have been sat on that beach. We had been watching my son play cricket, and it overran. We could easily have gone down to the beach rather than straight to the pub and restaurant," he reflected, adding, "You can only imagine what could have happened."
Vaughan commended a civilian who intervened during the incident, calling him "a hero," while also praising the composed response of police and bystanders. He denounced the targeting of Jewish people celebrating Hanukkah as "hideous."
"To target Bondi is also horrible," Vaughan wrote, describing the beach as "the haven of chill." Despite the trauma, Vaughan emphasized that fear would not define the community, asserting that life must continue. "You just have to instil defiance," he stated, adding that "the destructive mindset of a few bad apples cannot stop the rest of us enjoying life."
In his closing observations, Vaughan noted that the morning after, Coogee appeared quieter and more subdued, with many residents still visibly affected by the events.
