Russians commonly bypass digital restrictions through VPN usage.
A small group of protesters gathered in Tomsk, Siberia on Sunday to demonstrate against Russia's prohibition of the American gaming platform Roblox, marking an unusual display of public opposition as frustration over the ban continues to grow.
In Russia's current wartime environment, censorship is widespread: Moscow restricts or completely blocks social media platforms including Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and YouTube, while promoting its own narrative through Russian media networks and approved social channels.
On December 3, Russia's communications regulatory agency Roskomnadzor announced it had blocked Roblox, claiming the platform was "filled with inappropriate content potentially harmful to children's spiritual and moral development."
The protest in Tomsk, located 2,900 kilometers east of Moscow, featured several dozen individuals who gathered despite snowy conditions. Participants displayed handmade signs with messages such as "Hands off Roblox" and "Roblox is the victim of the digital Iron Curtain" in Vladimir Vysotsky Park, according to images provided by a protest organizer.
One placard critically stated, "Bans and blocks are all you are able to do." Photographs documented approximately 25 people standing in a circle in the snow while holding their protest signs.
The Roblox ban has sparked discussions across Russia about censorship, child safety in relation to technology, and the effectiveness of digital restrictions in an era where young people can easily circumvent such barriers with minimal effort.
Many Russian citizens simply bypass these restrictions using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), though some younger Russians have questioned the purpose of implementing bans that can be so easily circumvented. Others have raised concerns about the lack of Russian alternatives to these banned applications.
Some Russian parents and educators have expressed concern that Roblox enabled children to access inappropriate sexual content and communicate with unknown adults.
Roblox, headquartered in San Mateo, California, has also faced bans in several other countries including Iraq and Turkey due to concerns about predators potentially exploiting the platform to target children.
The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment. When Russia initially implemented the ban, Roblox stated it maintains "a deep commitment to safety" and provides "rigorous built-in protections to help keep users safe."
Russian officials defend their censorship practices as necessary protection against what they describe as a sophisticated "information war" conducted by Western powers, and to shield against "decadent" Western cultural influences that they claim undermine "traditional" Russian values.
