Trump announced that both leaders have agreed to return to the "original Peace Accord" signed in October.
US President Donald Trump declared on Friday that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to immediately renew their ceasefire agreement following a week of deadly border clashes that resulted in at least 20 casualties and displaced approximately half a million people. Trump credited his personal intervention along with assistance from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for facilitating this accord.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, the US President revealed he had a "very good" conversation with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. Both leaders committed to "cease all shooting effective this evening."
The President noted that the leaders also agreed to revert to the "original Peace Accord" signed in October in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with Trump and Ibrahim serving as witnesses to the agreement.
"I had a very good conversation this morning with the Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, and the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Manet, concerning the very unfortunate reawakening of their long-running War. They have agreed to CEASE all shooting effective this evening, and go back to the original Peace Accord made with me, and them, with the help of the Great Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim," Trump stated in his post.
Trump characterized the roadside bomb incident that triggered the recent violence as an accident, while acknowledging Thailand's forceful retaliation. He hailed the restoration of peaceful relations as a significant diplomatic achievement.
"The roadside bomb that originally killed and wounded numerous Thai Soldiers was an accident, but Thailand nevertheless retaliated very strongly. Both Countries are ready for PEACE and continued Trade with the United States of America. It is my Honor to work with Anutin and Hun in resolving what could have evolved into a major War between two otherwise wonderful and prosperous Countries! I would also like to thank the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, for his assistance in this very important matter," Trump added.
The recent hostilities between the two nations began earlier this week when Thailand launched airstrikes against Cambodian military positions on Monday morning. This action followed Cambodian shelling that killed a Thai soldier and injured several others along the contentious border region, according to the Bangkok Post.
The Royal Thai Army reported that Cambodian forces fired shells and rockets at Thai military and civilian areas around 7 am in the Chong Bok area of Nam Yuen district, resulting in one Thai soldier's death and injuries to four others.
Major General Winthai Suvaree stated that Thai troops returned fire and subsequently deployed fighter jets to strike Cambodian positions in order to stop the incoming attacks, as reported by the Bangkok Post.
