OpenAI Launches GPT-5.2 AI Model, Better At Creating Spreadsheets

OpenAI has officially released its new GPT-5.2 artificial intelligence model, with rollout beginning immediately for paid subscribers.

On Thursday, OpenAI unveiled GPT-5.2, following reports that CEO Sam Altman had declared an internal "code red" in early December. This emergency measure reportedly paused non-essential projects and redirected teams to accelerate development efforts in direct response to Google's release of Gemini 3.

According to OpenAI's announcement, GPT-5.2 delivers significant enhancements in general intelligence capabilities, coding proficiency, and long-context understanding. The company emphasized that this latest model will provide increased economic value for users through improved functionality in creating spreadsheets, building presentations, and managing complex multi-step projects.

This launch comes after Google released the latest version of its Gemini model in November, which Google highlighted as taking the lead position on several industry benchmarks that measure AI model performance.

Addressing competitive concerns during a CNBC interview alongside Disney CEO Bob Iger, Altman remarked, "Gemini 3 has had less of an impact on our metrics than we feared." Google did not provide an immediate response when contacted for comment.

In a related development, Disney announced a $1 billion investment in OpenAI, which will grant the AI company permission to incorporate characters from major franchises including Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel into its Sora AI video generator.

The Microsoft-backed AI company confirmed it currently has no plans to discontinue earlier versions—GPT-5.1, GPT-5, or GPT-4.1—from its application programming interface.

OpenAI stated that GPT-5.2 will be available in three variants—Instant, Thinking, and Pro—with rollout beginning Thursday for paying customers.
