Danish Intelligence Agency Classifies US as Security Risk Amid Greenland Tensions and Arctic Competition

Denmark's intelligence agency has officially labeled the United States as a potential security threat for the first time, citing America's growing self-interest and power tactics toward allies. This unprecedented shift comes amid tensions over Greenland and Arctic dominance, with specific concerns about US economic coercion and potential military actions. While Russia and China remain Denmark's primary security concerns, the report signals deteriorating trust in traditional alliance structures.

Danish Intelligence Says US Now A Possible Security Risk

For the first time, a Danish intelligence agency has classified the United States as a potential security concern, marking a significant shift in Denmark's perspective toward its long-standing ally amid growing tensions over Greenland.

The Danish Defence Intelligence Service (DDIS), a key espionage organization in the Nordic nation, stated in its 2025 intelligence outlook published Wednesday that the US is increasingly prioritizing its own interests, "now using its economic and technological strength as a tool of power, even toward allies and partners."

The report specifically highlighted America's intensifying interest in Greenland, a territory belonging to the Danish kingdom, as part of the escalating great-power competition in the Arctic region.

This annual threat assessment follows Donald Trump's multiple statements expressing desire to acquire control of Greenland, which created diplomatic tension between Copenhagen and Washington. The US president has not excluded the possibility of using military force to take the Arctic island.

According to the intelligence agency, "The United States employs economic power, including threats of high tariffs, to impose its will, and no longer excludes military force, even against allies."

Despite this new classification of the US, the report still identifies Russia and China as the primary security risks. The agency emphasized that the overall threat landscape facing Denmark has "become more serious." Uncertainties regarding America's role as Europe's security guarantor may increase Russia's willingness to intensify hybrid attacks against NATO, while China continues to challenge Western influence through economic and military leverage.

The report concluded that "the Baltic Sea region represents the area with the greatest risk that Russia will employ military force against NATO."
