Record-Breaking Golden Retriever Gathering: 2,397 Dogs Create History in Argentina

Families gathered for cherished pet selfies under the intense summer sun of the Southern Hemisphere.

The distinctive sound of 2,397 golden retrievers barking could be heard from miles away in Argentina's capital, establishing an unofficial world record for the largest gathering of this beloved breed.

Bosques de Palermo, a vast park in Buenos Aires, vibrated with energy as golden retriever owners from across Argentina transformed the grassy landscape into a magnificent display of golden fur.

Dog enthusiasts of all ages, their clothing adorned with dog hair and saliva marks, relaxed on picnic blankets with their treasured pets, marveling at the extraordinary sight of countless similar-looking dogs. Children expressed pure joy as they eagerly petted every golden retriever that pranced within reach.

Under the scorching summer sun, families captured memorable moments with their furry companions.

While enjoying traditional yerba mate drinks, attendees enthusiastically exchanged information about golden retrievers' remarkable abilities—such as detecting low blood sugar and cancer—and shared heartfelt stories about how these dogs provided comfort through life's various challenges.

"She's been an integral part of our family since childhood. We've vacationed together and shared countless experiences," shared Nicolás Orellana, a 26-year-old wearing a golden retriever-adorned T-shirt. His family traveled an hour and a half from their hometown in Buenos Aires province specifically for this event.

"This breed is known for forming exceptional bonds with humans," he explained while gently petting his content 13-year-old golden retriever, Luna.

Surrounding them, fellow golden retrievers enthusiastically greeted one another, many sporting creative costumes ranging from Argentine soccer jerseys and national flags to tutus and Star Wars-themed accessories.

Amidst the sea of wagging tails and treat distributions, ten dedicated dog-loving volunteers in yellow vests moved through the crowd with clipboards, meticulously registering each golden retriever present.

After hours of careful counting, the final tally was announced late Monday. With 2,397 golden retrievers documented, event organizer Fausto Duperre proudly declared that Argentina had surpassed the previous informal world record set in Vancouver last year, which featured 1,685 golden retrievers.

"This truly represents a historic milestone," exclaimed Duperre, a 28-year-old Argentine actor who has established himself as a golden retriever influencer on social media, regularly sharing content featuring his 10-year-old golden retriever named Oli.

"I feel immensely grateful, happy, proud, excited, and overjoyed all simultaneously," he added with enthusiasm.

Initial aspirations for capturing a comprehensive group photo featuring only the dogs quickly dissipated as it became evident that neither owners nor pets could tolerate even brief moments of separation. Additionally, there was legitimate concern about dogs becoming lost among thousands of similar-looking companions. Owners maintained tight control of leashes to keep their pets nearby.

Some participants admitted they anticipated complete chaos from Monday's gathering but were pleasantly surprised by how smoothly and enjoyably everything unfolded—much like the temperament of golden retrievers themselves.

"I feared losing her, worried about potential conflicts with other dogs, or that she might be attacked," confessed 64-year-old Elena Deleo while affectionately stroking her golden retriever Angie. "But no, they're all affectionate and gentle... It was truly a delightful experience."
