Political resistance is mounting in Bangladesh as mainstream parties challenge the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government for apparently allowing radical Islamist organizations like Jamaat-E-Islami to operate freely.
Tarique Rahman, Acting Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), strongly criticized Jamaat-E-Islami during the launch of BNP's six-day "Plan to Build the Country" initiative.
Rahman, who is former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia's son, has been notably absent from Bangladesh despite his mother's deteriorating health, prompting widespread speculation.
"Those seeking public support today were witnessed by this nation in 1971. They massacred hundreds of thousands and their collaborators violated countless mothers and sisters. We must never forget this history," Rahman stated, emphasizing Jamaat's role in the killings of innocent Bangladeshis (then East Pakistanis) in 1971 to protect their political interests.
"I've been warning since August 5 that these are troubling times. More challenging periods await us. Various conspiracies are being orchestrated from multiple directions. Only public resistance can thwart these plots, and BNP stands ready to resist alongside the people," Rahman declared, adding that democracy remains the only solution.
Positioning his party as the sole entity capable of addressing corruption in Bangladesh, Rahman made an implicit comparison between former PM Sheikh Hasina and Jamaat, likening the hardline Islamist organization to the "fallen dictator" who allegedly killed thousands to maintain power before escaping.
Rahman previously addressed questions about his absence from Bangladesh despite his mother's illness and the approaching national elections.
"During this critical period, I naturally desire my mother's affectionate touch. However, like everyone, realizing this wish isn't entirely within my decision-making authority or control. There are limitations to discussing this sensitive matter. Our family remains hopeful that my extended, anxious wait for repatriation will conclude once this political reality reaches the necessary state," Rahman explained in a Facebook statement.
Khaleda Zia is expected to be transported abroad for medical treatment via air ambulance, which has received clearance to land at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport tomorrow.
Following Sheikh Hasina's removal in August last year, minorities in Bangladesh have suffered persecution as Islamic extremists operate with apparent impunity. Terror suspects have been released from imprisonment, and attacks against minority communities including Bauls and Ahmadiyyas have increased. Hindu communities continue facing persecution, with Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das remaining imprisoned on allegedly fabricated charges.
