As Syrians commemorate the first anniversary of Bashar al-Assad's overthrow, controversial videos purportedly capturing private conversations between the former Syrian president and his late adviser Luna al-Shibl have emerged online. These recordings, released by Al Arabiya, show Assad in candid moments while driving, though the exact date of the footage remains unknown.
In one disturbing clip, Assad mocks Syrian citizens, stating they invest in mosques but "can't even afford food," revealing his contempt for the population he once ruled.
Another segment captures Assad expressing his feelings about Syria's situation with shocking candor: "I just don't feel ashamed, I feel disgusted."
Perhaps most troubling is a moment when al-Shibl apparently informs Assad they are passing through Ghouta, the location of a devastating 2013 chemical weapons attack attributed to Assad's forces. His response is chilling as he laughs and says, "May God curse Ghouta, it needs slaughter."
The recordings also feature Assad mocking Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing him as "bloated" and suggesting his appearance is the result of cosmetic procedures—a striking contrast to their public relationship.
According to Al Arabiya's report, these sensitive recordings were discovered in the Presidential Palace, stored in an envelope marked "Top Secret" alongside personal documents belonging to al-Shibl, who died in July 2024 following injuries sustained in a car accident.
The footage has sparked strong reactions across social media platforms. One X user commented, "Syrians - and the world - deserve to see the truth behind closed doors. Accountability starts with evidence." Reddit users described Assad as a "psychopath criminal" with another expressing hope that "one day he will be put to trial by the very same people he is disgusted by."
Assad fled to Russia approximately one year ago when rebels led by Syria's current president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, captured Damascus, ending his rule after more than 13 years of devastating conflict that originated from an uprising against his regime.
The Assad family, members of Syria's Alawite minority, maintained control over Syria for 54 years before their downfall.
Syria's conflict resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and displaced millions, with approximately five million people seeking refuge in neighboring countries.
According to the UN refugee agency, around 1.2 million refugees and 1.9 million internally displaced individuals have returned home since Assad's removal from power, though declining global funding could impede further repatriation efforts.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that humanitarian needs throughout Syria remain critical, with approximately 16.5 million people requiring assistance in 2025.
