Netanyahu Rejects Political Retirement Despite Potential Presidential Pardon in Corruption Case

Netanyahu has consistently rejected allegations of bribery and fraud throughout his corruption trial.

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that receiving a presidential pardon in his ongoing corruption case would not lead to his retirement from political life.

When questioned by a journalist about whether he would exit politics if granted a pardon, Netanyahu's response was unequivocal: "no".

Last month, Netanyahu formally requested a pardon from President Isaac Herzog, with his legal team arguing that the prime minister's frequent court appearances were interfering with his governmental responsibilities and that a pardon would serve the national interest.

In Israel, pardons have traditionally been issued only after legal proceedings have concluded and a conviction has been secured. There is no historical precedent for granting a pardon during an ongoing trial.

Netanyahu has consistently maintained his innocence against charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. His attorneys have stated that the prime minister remains confident that if the legal process were to conclude naturally, it would result in his complete exoneration.

Before Netanyahu submitted his pardon request, U.S. President Donald Trump had written to President Herzog encouraging him to consider granting the prime minister clemency.

Several Israeli opposition figures have suggested that any pardon should be contingent upon Netanyahu admitting guilt and withdrawing from politics. Others have proposed that the prime minister should first call for national elections, which are currently scheduled to take place by October 2026.
