First Lady Melania Trump Illuminates National Christmas Tree at Traditional White House Ceremony

First lady Melania Trump illuminated the National Christmas Tree on Thursday evening during the traditional ceremony held in Washington.

The annual lighting event took place on the Ellipse, located just south of the White House, where President Donald Trump announced to attendees, "The first lady is going to do the honors."

President Trump led the countdown from five to zero, after which Melania stepped forward to press the button that illuminated the tree with stunning gold-toned lights.

"It's a beauty," remarked the president as the tree began to sparkle.

The White House shared the festive moment on social media with the caption "MERRY CHRISTMAS! @POTUS and @FLOTUS light the beautiful National Christmas Tree ✨🎄"

The celebration featured performances by several notable artists including iconic rock group the Beach Boys, Christian music performer Matthew West, and country musicians Gabby Barrett, Jon Pardi, Alana Springsteen, Brett Young, and Warren Zeiders.

During his brief address, President Trump highlighted the peace agreement signed earlier that day between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He also referenced claims about the 2020 election being "rigged," but expressed satisfaction that his terms weren't consecutive, as he will be in office during next year's World Cup soccer tournament and Summer Olympics hosted in the United States.

The president extended gratitude to those serving the needy, law enforcement officers, first responders, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol agents "who risk their lives every day."

Trump also addressed the shooting of two National Guard members near the White House on the day before Thanksgiving, one of whom was fatally injured. He mentioned speaking with the family of Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, who is currently recovering in hospital.

Following his return to the White House, the president shared on his social media platform a photograph showing Wolfe's family gathered around him at his desk in the Oval Office.

In the social media post, Trump stated that Wolfe "is in the process of healing. His parents, brother, and all of his friends are praying. I just met them in the Oval Office — They are fantastic American Patriots!"
