A tragic incident occurred in central China when a hotel guest passed away after hotel employees failed to deliver his heart medication for five hours. This unfortunate event has sparked discussions regarding hotel responsibilities toward guests in medical situations.
The deceased, a 51-year-old man with the surname Hu, was discovered unresponsive in his accommodation at Wuhan's Yeste Hotel in Hubei province on November 20, according to South China Morning Post.
Hu had checked into the hotel the previous evening after his friend Han Shun brought him from a faraway district following work. The next morning, Hu contacted Han complaining about feeling unwell and requested assistance in obtaining his medication from another friend's residence. Han arrived at the hotel with the necessary medication approximately 30 minutes later, around 9:40 am.
Upon arrival, Han requested the reception staff to deliver the medication to Hu's room. However, Han only knew Hu's first name and nickname, lacking complete identification details. Hotel staff allegedly declined to deliver the medication, claiming it wasn't their responsibility, and refused to provide Hu's room number. Despite Han's multiple attempts to contact Hu by phone, there was no response. Due to other pressing matters, Han ultimately left the medication at the front desk with a message before departing.
Tragically, five hours later when Hu was scheduled to check out, a housekeeping employee entered his room and discovered him deceased. Security footage later revealed that reception staff had retained possession of the medication throughout this period. According to information shared by Hu's family, the medication was prescribed for treating hypertension and angina. The family attributed blame to the hotel, asserting that staff failed to check on Hu's wellbeing despite knowing he required medication and was unreachable by phone.
Hotel personnel stated that Han hadn't informed them about Hu's medical condition and, respecting guest privacy, did not examine the contents of the medication package. Han similarly mentioned that Hu hadn't disclosed details about his health condition or medication requirements.
This incident has generated significant online discourse. Some individuals believe the hotel should have contacted the guest or verified his condition when phone calls went unanswered. Others maintain that Han bears greater responsibility for not providing complete identification details, room information, or communicating the severity of Hu's condition.
