Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has been placed under intensive care as her health condition deteriorates, prompting her family to request nationwide prayers for her recovery.
The 80-year-old political leader was hospitalized on November 23 with lung infection symptoms and is now in what Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) officials describe as a "very critical" condition.
"Khaleda Zia is in intensive care and consultations with physicians are ongoing," stated Ahmed Azam Khan, a BNP representative, while addressing reporters outside the Dhaka hospital on Saturday.
Medical officials have arranged for an air ambulance to remain on standby for potential overseas treatment should her condition stabilize enough for travel.
The Daily Star newspaper reports that Zia suffers from multiple health complications including "heart problems, liver and kidney issues, diabetes, lung problems, arthritis, and eye-related illnesses." She has previously undergone cardiac procedures including permanent pacemaker implantation and stenting.
Her son Tarique Rahman, who has resided in London since 2008, issued an emotional appeal for prayers. "We express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for all your prayers and love for the highly respected Begum Khaleda Zia," the 60-year-old Rahman stated in a social media message. "We fervently request you to continue your prayers for her early recovery."
Rahman explained his inability to return to Bangladesh, citing circumstances beyond his control: "I share the same deep longing as any child to have my mother's touch in moments of crisis. However, the decision to return home is neither straightforward nor mine alone to make."
Zia, who served three terms as Bangladesh's prime minister, was imprisoned on corruption charges in 2018 during Sheikh Hasina's administration, which also prevented her from seeking medical treatment abroad. Her release came following Hasina's ouster last year.
Despite her declining health, Zia has expressed determination to participate in the upcoming elections expected in February 2026, where the BNP is considered a strong contender.
Liton Molla, a 45-year-old supporter who waited outside the hospital, told AFP: "I just pray she recovers and can contest in the election. At this moment Bangladesh needs a leader like Khaleda Zia."
Interim leader Muhammad Yunus also acknowledged Zia's significance in a statement: "During this transitional period to democracy, Khaleda Zia is a source of utmost inspiration for the nation. Her recovery is very important for the country."
