Hezbollah Leader Warns of Possible War Following Commander's Assassination by Israel

Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem has declared the group's right to retaliate against Israel for killing its top military commander Haytham Ali Tabtabai, while acknowledging the possibility of a new war. As pressure mounts from Israel and the US for Lebanon to disarm militant groups, Hezbollah maintains it will not surrender its weapons while Israeli forces occupy areas in southern Lebanon and continue their strikes on Lebanese territory.

Expect A War Later? What Hezbollah Said On Commander's Killing By Israel

Hezbollah's Secretary-General Naim Qassem declared on Friday that the organization reserves the right to retaliate against Israel for the assassination of its senior military commander, leaving open the possibility of a new armed conflict.

Speaking in a televised address, Qassem's remarks came amid growing concerns in Lebanon that Israel might intensify its bombardment to force Hezbollah to surrender its weapons arsenal across the country, a demand the group has consistently refused.

The killing of Hezbollah's top military commander Haytham Ali Tabtabai in an Israeli strike on Beirut's southern suburbs on November 23 has significantly heightened these concerns.

Qassem emphasized that Hezbollah would determine the timing of any response, stating that Israeli threats of a broader air campaign had no effect on the group's resolve. Regarding the prospect of renewed warfare, he stated, "The possibility of war exists, and the possibility of no war also exists."

While not explicitly outlining Hezbollah's strategy in the event of a new conflict, Qassem suggested Lebanon should develop a plan to confront Israel that utilizes "its army and its people."

The Hezbollah leader also expressed hope that Pope Leo's forthcoming visit to Lebanon "will play a role in bringing about peace and ending the Israeli aggression."

Lebanon faces increasing pressure from both Israel and the United States to expedite the disarmament of Hezbollah and other militant groups throughout the country.

Shortly after Qassem concluded his speech, Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee criticized the Lebanese army's efforts to seize Hezbollah weapons in southern Lebanon as "inadequate," claiming, "Hezbollah continues to manipulate them and work covertly to maintain its arsenal."

Hezbollah has maintained its position that it will not relinquish its weapons while Israel continues strikes on Lebanese territory and occupies five areas in southern Lebanon.
