US President Donald Trump sparked controversy by sharing an AI-generated image on his Truth Social platform depicting himself holding a blue sign stating "TRUMP 2028, YES!" He captioned the post "TRUMPLICANS!" – a portmanteau combining "Trump" and "Republicans."
This provocative image reignited discussions around the 22nd Amendment, which explicitly prohibits presidents from serving more than two elected terms, raising questions about whether Trump is suggesting interest in extending his time in office beyond constitutional limits.
The controversial post appeared approximately ten months into Trump's second non-consecutive term, which began January 20, 2025. During this period, Trump has been working alongside a Republican-majority Congress to implement his "America First 2.0" policy agenda, focusing on stricter immigration enforcement and increased tariffs on major trading partners.
References to "Trump 2028" have become increasingly common throughout his second term, appearing on merchandise and being subtly incorporated into various public events.
In September, Trump shared images showing "Trump 2028" hats prominently displayed on his desk during an Oval Office meeting with Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer.
When questioned about these suggestions in October, House Speaker Mike Johnson, a key Republican figure, dismissed the speculation, suggesting the president was simply "trolling" and having a "good time."
"There is the 22nd Amendment...I think the president knows. And he and I have talked about the constrictions of the Constitution," Johnson explained during a press conference.
Trump himself has seemingly acknowledged the constitutional limitation, stating last month: "I'm not allowed to run, it's too bad."
Meanwhile, a recent McLaughlin and Associates poll reveals that Donald Trump Jr. is gaining significant support among Republican voters for the 2028 presidential nomination, positioning himself as a serious challenger to Vice President JD Vance.
The polling trend shows a shifting landscape: in August, Vance held a commanding 20-point advantage with 36 percent support compared to Trump Jr.'s 16 percent. By October, this gap narrowed to 18 points, with Vance at 38 percent and Trump Jr. rising to 20 percent. The latest November polling shows Vance's lead further reduced to just 10 points, as his support declined to 34 percent while Trump Jr. increased to 24 percent.
