US President Donald Trump engaged in a telephone conversation with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro last week, according to a report by the New York Times.
During this call, the two leaders reportedly discussed the possibility of arranging a face-to-face meeting in the United States, as revealed by multiple sources familiar with the conversation. The New York Times noted that no concrete plans have been established for such a meeting, which would mark a historic first encounter between the Venezuelan leader, widely considered authoritarian, and a sitting US president.
The disclosure of this communication comes at a time when Trump continues to employ confrontational rhetoric toward Venezuela while simultaneously appearing open to diplomatic channels.
Trump's administration has consistently characterized Maduro as an illegitimate ruler who allegedly oversees a drug trafficking organization known as Cartel de los Soles—accusations that the Venezuelan government in Caracas firmly denies.
Since early September, US forces have been conducting operations against suspected drug boats originating from Venezuela and other Latin American countries. These actions have drawn criticism from Democrats, academic experts, and human rights advocates who have described them as extrajudicial executions.
As recently as Thursday, Trump reiterated previous threats to expand military actions to include land-based targets. "The land is easier, but that's going to start very soon," Trump stated when speaking to reporters.
Requests for comment from both the White House and the Venezuelan communications ministry, which handles all government press inquiries, did not receive immediate responses.
